  • DINKY REVIEW ON RA

Boxing Day is a risky choice for the launch of a new clubbing night. Nevertheless, it was chosen as the birth date of Doblar, a concept by local Middlesbrough DJ and record label boss Paul Bowen held at The Medicine Bar. Doblar began by entrusting an unknown local DJ competition winner, Rob Alderson, to warm-up for Cocoon and Crosstown Rebels associate Dinky. Bar grooves were in abundance as Alderson prepped the crowd with an hour of mellow house before picking up the pace as people started to group inside the club. By 11:30 PM, the space was packed as thoughts seemingly started to turn to the start of a four-hour set by the headliner downstairs.

Dinky said in a pre-interview for the night that, as a DJ, she loves to mix records—that's it. Rather than placing emphasis on the use of effects, she prefers to allow the individual personalities of tracks she plays to dominate. This was obvious, as many of the records she spun were used without manipulation and in their entirety, giving a classic sound to her set. Dinky managed to entwine past and present, as the lyrics of Danny Tengalia's "Music Is the Answer" and Eddie Amador's "House Music" blended perfectly in to more recent efforts like "Amame" from Intruder and Subb-an's remix of Noir & Haze's "Around." A beautiful moment came as the crowd was lifted by the haunting voice of Arthur Russell through Justin Harris' "Moon," with a sing-along following, much to the delight of the headliner.

The Chilean born jock definitely brings her own flair, but in an understated way. She constantly looked relaxed, and interacted with a crowd, who were, at times, rather overbearing in their enthusiasm for the tracks she was playing. And even politics between promoter and club, which saw Dinky's set cut half an hour short, could not ruin the atmosphere at the end of the night, as people hung around waiting for more.

    About Nyra

Nyra was born in the north of England, not too many years ago. From humble surroundings and still only in his early twenties he has already reached a point where he has travelled all over the globe, DJing from the Black Sea to Canada, Space Ibiza, Miami WMC, Sonar festival in Barcelona, Extrema festival in Holland, and the ADE. What has propelled him so quickly into the ears, hearts and sets of so many people is his undeniable passion, technique, and breathtaking ability to cover a huge amount of musical ground while always remaining absolutely on point with his selection, guided by an innate sense of rhythm, musicality and flow.

Deep, low slung and stripped back, his blending of grooves loosely fit under the banner of house and techno and have a timeless quality, with his crate digging hunger giving him such an armory of music to fill his sets that he literally can play all night long. You often don’t know whether he’s playing old or new tracks, unless you’re one of the few who have the musical depth to be aware of the often obscure musical gems he’s dug out from god knows where. Then again, part of the joy of Nyra’s sets is the fact that he’s going to take you somewhere you probably haven’t been before, bringing a fresh angle to the dance floor that everybody enjoys.

As a producer Nyra is also incredibly adept at reducing grooves to their bare essence, a minimalist approach but without tracks sounding sterile. Always with maximum rhythmical interest and always inventive. Not obvious, they tend to be oblique excursions into groove science. Nyra’s new tracks really are causing a stir at the moment and his release schedule is set to seriously increase as we move into the future.

In an age when everything is available to everyone, all the time, at the click of the mouse, things become about more than just access to tracks, it's knowing which to pick out of the sea of content washing over us all….. and where to put them. It's back to the original skill at the heart of DJing vibe maintenance. This is Nyra’s core strength. It’s an ability that belies his age, and is testament to how dedicated he’s been to his art since obtaining his first set of decks at the tender age of 16. He has thrown himself completely into the world of electronic music since this point.

  • NYC Meets Boro!

Levon Vincent will make a Middlesbrough appearance here at doblar march the 24th 2012 for another Middlesbrough exclusive under our belt! It's in our interest that we bring forward thinking music to this tiny industrial town and this is no exception so lets give him a message to send home that this crazy little town has something special, and an amazing crowd!

    Who's Levon Vincent?

Levon Vincent has created quite a buzz on the Electronic Music scene of late . With a heavy dj schedule , personal invitations to rock Berghain from none other than Marcel Detmann . A much talked about podcast for Resident Advisor ; a no 54 spot on the best 100 ranking dj’s by Resident Advisor , massive releases on his own Deconstruct and Novel Sound imprints as well as a heavy hitter by the name of “Late Night Jam” on Berlin’s much revered label associated to the infamous Berghain/Panoramabar ; Ostgut Ton .

Levon Vincent is a DJ and producer from NYC. He is part of the tri-state’s Underground Quality crew Headed by label owner Jus Ed. He runs the Novel Sound label and also makes records for Deconstruct Music, a second label which he manages alongside longtime friend Anthony Parasole (of House n Home/ The Club House).

”I spent my teenage years in the pre-Guiliani dance-friendly 90’s on 8th street at Patricia Field’s store, ticketing clothing in the basement during days, then spending my nights DJing and learning to make house music. In that era I DJ’d at clubs like Limelite, Shelter, Save the Robots, and Nation. The latter half of the 90s was pretty weak in NY, and I dropped out to focus on learning more about music. In 2002, I started working for Halcyon Records in Brooklyn where we hosted parties with DJs like Frankie Knuckles, Danny Krivit, Nicky Siano, Mark Kamins, Jus-Ed and many more inspirational figures. During this time I ran my first record label, “MoremusicNY” and I made my first deep house record, nomoreheros, (released in 2002). Jaymz Nylon heard it in the store and gave me some very important feedback, and helped me understand a newer approach to doing arrangements “on the fly”, which I then explored for the next several years. This technique proved to be a huge piece of the puzzle for me. In 2007 I began preparation for my label, Novel Sound, under the guidance of friend and mentor Jus Ed.”.

2010/11 has already a busy year for the dj/producer with a heavy dj tour schedule across Europe , Japan , Singaopre , USA and beyond. More goodies forthcoming on both Novel Sound and Deconstruct as well as Ostgut Ton.
